Allergy & Immunotherapy Program
at FirstCare Springdale

What is an Allergy?
An allergy is an immune response to a substance the body recognizes as foreign. When a person is exposed to an allergic substance, he or she may develop symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes, or wheezing.

Do I have Allergies?

If you have symptoms such as:

  • Runny Nose
  • Ear Pain or Fullness
  • Sore Throat
  • Watery Eyes
  • Headaches
  • Trouble Breathing
  • Skin Problems
  • Fatigue
Talk to your practitioner about the possibility of allergies.

How are allergies diagnosed?
At FirstCare Springdale, we use allergy testing methods that include the "Multi-Test" method and intradermal testing. The multi-test method involves simply scratching the back while applying the allergy test substances. Once the multi-test is complete it may be necessary to proceed to the intradermal test. When the entire test is completed, your practitioner will evaluate your results.

What can I do to help my allergies?
  1. Talk to your practitioner about the possibility of allergies. It may be possible to control your symptoms with medication or you may need to be evaluated for allergy injections.
  2. Follow these tips developed to help control allergy symptoms:
  • Avoid being outside between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., when pollen levels are highest.
  • Keep windows closed if you are allergic to pollen. Open them if you are allergic to dust.
  • Keep cool.
  • Keep air conditioners and humidifiers clean.
  • Keep lawns mowed short and wear mask while mowing.
  • Shower and shampoo if you think you have been exposed to pollen.
  • Wash hands
  • Dry clothing and linens inside.
  • Avoid cigarrette smoke, pets, and alcoholic beverages.
  • Use your air conditioner.
  • Avoid things you are allergic to, expecially if you are planning to take your allergy shot that day. This will help eliminate reactions.

What is Immunotherapy?

We treat allergies by using small injections of allergy extract custom made for each patient. The injections start with very diluted extract, and as you progress through the build-up phase, the extract gets stronger until you reach your maintenance dose.
